Montelukast: A Medication for Asthma and Allergy Relief.

Montelukast is a medication designed to reduce inflammation and prevent asthma attacks in adults and children at least 2 years old. It is also used to prevent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, a narrowing of the air passages in the lungs caused by exercise, in adults and children who are at least 6 years old. For individuals with seasonal or year-round allergies, montelukast can be considered as an additional treatment when other options have not provided relief.

Montelukast works by decreasing the symptoms and the number of acute asthma attacks. However, it is not a fast-acting rescue medicine and should be taken daily to be effective. It is available in various forms, including tablets and chewable tablets, and is prescribed by doctors to treat and prevent asthma, as well as to alleviate symptoms of allergic rhinitis such as sneezing, runny nose, itching, or wheezing.

If you already take montelukast regularly to prevent asthma or allergy symptoms, do not take an extra dose to treat exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. Always follow your doctor’s instructions for proper use and dosage. Montelukast was FDA approved in 1998 and has been a trusted medication for managing respiratory issues and allergies ever since.
