Neotigason is a medication used to treat severe cases of psoriasis and other skin disorders. It belongs to a group of medicines called retinoids, which are similar to Vitamin A. Vitamin A is essential for the normal growth and development of the skin.

Neotigason is available in two strengths: 10 mg and 25 mg capsules. Each capsule contains the active ingredient acitretin, which helps to reverse the abnormal skin cell growth and keratinization associated with psoriasis and other skin conditions.

How It Works

• Active Ingredient: Acitretin, a metabolite of etretinate, is closely related to retinoic acid and Vitamin A.
• Absorption: Acitretin reaches peak plasma concentration within 1 to 5 hours after ingestion, and its bioavailability is best when taken with food.
• Metabolism: It is excreted entirely in the form of its metabolites, primarily through the kidneys and bile.

• Severe Psoriasis: Neotigason is effective in reducing the scale, erythema, and thickness of psoriatic lesions, as well as decreasing inflammation in the epidermis.
• Disorders of Keratinization: It can also treat severe forms of disorders like hyperkeratosis palmaris et plantaris.

Common Side Effects

• Metabolic Changes: Elevated serum cholesterol and triglycerides are common side effects.
• Gastrointestinal Issues: Cheilitis, rhagades of the corner of the mouth, and dry mouth are also common.
• Neurological Effects: Headache, fatigue, depression, and sleep disturbances can occur.

Important Information

• Precautions: Pseudotumour cerebri and gynaecomastia are rare but serious side effects. Liver function tests should be monitored regularly.
• Special Populations: Plasma concentrations may be lower in patients with end-stage renal failure, but it is not removed by haemodialysis.
