Optachlor is a chloramphenicol ophthalmic solution designed to treat various eye infections caused by bacteria such as Bacterium coli, Hemophilus influenza, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus hemolyticus. It is also effective against conditions like trachoma, conjunctivitis, keratitis, and blepharitis.

Each 10 mL bottle contains 50 mg of chloramphenicol. The solution is available in a 5GM pack size, making it convenient for long-term use. Optachlor is marketed by Remington Pharmaceuticals and is a generic category anti-infective medication.

How to Use

1. **Preparation**: Wash your hands thoroughly before use.

2. **Application**: Tilt your head back and gently pull the lower eyelid away from the eye to create a space. Drop the prescribed number of drops into this space. Let go of the eyelid and close your eyes for 1-2 minutes to allow the medicine to come into contact with the infection.

3. **Precautions**: Avoid touching the applicator tip to any surface, including the eye. Keep the container tightly closed to maintain its germ-free status.

Important Precautions

• Optic Neuritis: Long-term use can cause optic neuritis, especially in young children. Monitor your vision and stop using the drops if you experience any visual disturbances. Consult your doctor for further guidance.
• Interactions: Chloramphenicol may interact with other antibiotics like macrolides, so it is best to avoid using them together.
• Pregnancy and Lactation: Chloramphenicol can cause adverse reactions in newborns and breastfeeding infants. Use it cautiously and only under medical supervision.
