Postinor: Emergency Contraceptive for Unprotected Sex
Postinor is an emergency contraceptive designed to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. It contains a synthetic hormone called levonorgestrel, which is effective in 99% of cases when taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. However, it is more effective if taken as soon as possible, ideally within 12 hours.
Postinor works by stopping your ovaries from releasing an egg and preventing sperm from fertilizing any egg you may already have released. It is crucial to take Postinor within the 72-hour window to ensure its effectiveness. If you have already taken Postinor and then have unprotected sex, it will not prevent a pregnancy.
Each tablet of Postinor contains 1500 micrograms of levonorgestrel and is packaged in a blister sheet with inactive ingredients like potato starch, maize starch, silica, magnesium stearate, talc, and lactose. It is essential to store the tablet in its original pack until you are ready to take it, as exposure to air can affect its potency.
Postinor is not a substitute for regular contraception and should only be used in emergency situations. If you have any concerns or experience side effects such as nausea, vomiting, or vaginal bleeding, contact your healthcare provider or the Poisons Information Centre.
By understanding how Postinor works and its limitations, you can make an informed decision about its use. Always consult with a healthcare professional if you have any questions or need further guidance.
