Key Uses

Healing of Erosive or Ulcerative GERD: Rabeprazole helps heal and reduce symptoms of erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in adults. It is typically taken once daily for 4 to 8 weeks.

Maintenance of Healing of Erosive or Ulcerative GERD: For patients who have healed from GERD, rabeprazole can be used to maintain healing and reduce the risk of relapse. The recommended dosage is 20 mg once daily, and controlled studies do not extend beyond 12 months.

Symptomatic GERD in Adults: Rabeprazole provides symptomatic relief for adults suffering from GERD. The recommended dosage is 20 mg once daily for up to 4 weeks.

Healing of Duodenal Ulcers: Rabeprazole is used to heal duodenal ulcers. The recommended dosage is 20 mg once daily after the morning meal, and treatment typically lasts up to 4 weeks.

Helicobacter pylori Eradication: Rabeprazole, when combined with amoxicillin and clarithromycin, is used to eradicate H. pylori bacteria, which can cause ulcers. The three medications are taken twice daily with meals for 7 days.

Pathological Hypersecretory Conditions: Rabeprazole is effective in treating conditions characterized by excessive stomach acid production, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The starting dose is 60 mg once daily, and the dosage may be adjusted based on patient needs.

Important Information

Dosage Forms: Rabeprazole is available in 10 mg and 20 mg delayed-release tablets.

Side Effects: Common side effects include constipation, feeling weak, and throat inflammation. Serious side effects may include osteoporosis, low blood magnesium, *Clostridioides difficile* infection, and pneumonia.

Use in Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: The safety of rabeprazole during pregnancy and breastfeeding is unclear.
