Septra is a powerful antibacterial medication that combines trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole to effectively treat a range of bacterial infections. Each tablet contains 80 mg of trimethoprim and 400 mg of sulfamethoxazole, along with inactive ingredients like docusate sodium, FD&C Red No. 40, magnesium stearate, povidone, and sodium starch glycolate. How It Works

Septra is rapidly absorbed after oral administration and works by inhibiting bacterial growth. Both sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim exist in various forms in the blood, with the free forms being the therapeutically active components. Approximately 44% of trimethoprim and 70% of sulfamethoxazole are bound to plasma proteins, but the presence of sulfamethoxazole does not significantly affect the protein binding of trimethoprim.

Indications and Usage

Septra is indicated for the treatment of acute otitis media in pediatric patients due to susceptible strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae. It is also used for the treatment of acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis in adults caused by susceptible strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae. Additionally, it is effective in treating travelers’ diarrhea caused by susceptible strains of enterotoxigenic E. coli.

Important Considerations

To maintain the effectiveness of Septra and other antibacterial drugs, it should only be used to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria. The medication should not be used for prolonged administration in otitis media at any age, and there is limited data on the safety of repeated use in pediatric patients under two years of age.

For travelers’ diarrhea, the recommended dosage is 160 mg of trimethoprim and 800 mg of sulfamethoxazole twice daily for three days.
