Simulect: Preventing Organ Rejection After Kidney Transplant

Simulect is a medication used to prevent the body from rejecting a newly transplanted kidney. It is a powder and solvent that are mixed into a solution for injection or infusion into a vein. The active substance in Simulect is basiliximab, a monoclonal antibody designed to target CD25, an antigen found on T-lymphocytes, which are white blood cells involved in the rejection of organ transplants.

Simulect is indicated for the prophylaxis of acute organ rejection in de novo allogeneic renal transplantation in adult and pediatric patients (1-17 years). It is typically used in combination with other medications such as ciclosporin, corticosteroids, azathioprine, and mycophenolate mofetil to prevent organ rejection.

The adult dose of Simulect is 40 mg, given as two 20 mg doses by intravenous injection. The first 20 mg dose is administered within 2 hours prior to the transplant. It is essential to have Simulect prescribed and administered by a doctor experienced in immunosuppressive treatment following an organ transplant, under qualified medical supervision.

Simulect should only be given if it is certain that the patient will receive the transplant and other necessary medications to prevent rejection. This medication can only be obtained with a prescription and is not suitable for self-administration.
