Tavanic is an antibiotic that belongs to the fluoroquinolone group. It works by blocking an enzyme that bacteria use to make copies of their DNA, effectively stopping the bacteria from growing and multiplying. This medication is used to treat various infections, including acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, and complicated skin and soft tissue infections. It is also indicated for pyelonephritis and complicated urinary tract infections, chronic bacterial prostatitis, and uncomplicated cystitis. Additionally, Tavanic is used for the post-exposure prophylaxis and curative treatment of inhalation anthrax.
Tavanic is available in both tablet and solution for infusion forms. The tablets are administered once or twice daily, depending on the specific infection being treated. It is essential to use Tavanic only when other commonly recommended antibiotics are not suitable for the initial treatment of these infections.
Some common side effects of Tavanic include light-headedness, dizziness, drowsiness, visual disturbances, nightmares, vertigo, dyspnea, tremor, anorexia, headache, phlebitis, diarrhea, and vomiting. In cases of overdose, central nervous symptoms such as confusion, light-headedness, impairment of consciousness, and seizures may occur, along with prolongation of the QT interval.
Tavanic is marketed by Sanofi and is authorized for use in the EU through national procedures. However, this has led to differences in the way the medicine can be used across various EU Member States, as seen in the summaries of product characteristics (SmPCs), labelling, and package leaflets.
