Thyrogen: A Highly Purified Recombinant Form of Human Thyroid Stimulating Hormone
Thyrogen, also known as thyrotropin alfa for injection, is a highly purified recombinant form of human thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). This glycoprotein is produced using recombinant DNA technology and synthesized in a genetically modified Chinese hamster ovary cell line. Thyrogen is a heterodimeric glycoprotein, consisting of two non-covalently linked subunits: an alpha subunit with 92 amino acid residues and a beta subunit with 118 residues. Each vial of Thyrogen contains 1.1 mg of thyrotropin alfa, along with excipients like Mannitol, Sodium Phosphate, and Sodium Chloride. After reconstitution with Sterile Water for Injection, USP, the solution contains 0.9 mg/mL of thyrotropin alfa and has a pH of approximately 7.0.
Thyrogen is indicated for use as an adjunctive treatment for radioiodine ablation of thyroid tissue remnants in patients who have undergone a near-total or total thyroidectomy for well-differentiated thyroid cancer and do not have evidence of metastatic thyroid cancer. It may also be used in combination with serum thyroglobulin (Tg) testing and radioiodine imaging to monitor and manage thyroid cancer.
Thyrogen is supplied as a sterile, non-pyrogenic, white to off-white lyophilized powder intended for intramuscular (IM) administration. Each vial is designed to provide a convenient and effective solution for healthcare professionals to manage thyroid cancer treatment.
By understanding the role of Thyrogen in thyroid cancer management, patients and healthcare providers can make informed decisions about its use in treatment protocols. This product is a valuable tool in the fight against thyroid cancer, offering a reliable and effective means of managing thyroid tissue remnants post-surgery.
