Xalatan Eye Drops for Glaucoma Treatment
Xalatan eye drops are used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. This condition occurs when the fluid in your eye drains too slowly, causing pressure to build up and potentially damage the back of your eye, leading to gradual loss of sight. If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to serious vision problems, including total blindness.
Xalatan belongs to a family of medicines called prostaglandin agonists. It works by allowing more fluid to flow out of your eye, thereby lowering the pressure inside. Each 1 mL of Xalatan contains 50 micrograms of latanoprost, and each drop contains about 1.5 micrograms.
When using Xalatan, it is essential to follow the prescribed dosage. Typically, one drop is administered in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. If you experience any eye infection, injury, or surgery, you should inform your doctor.
Common side effects of Xalatan include misdirected eyelashes, darkening of the skin on the eyelids, crusting, redness, thickening, itching, or burning of the eyelids, sensitivity to light, skin rash, headache, muscle/joint pain, and painful or frequent urination. In rare cases, more severe reactions such as wheezing, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, chest pain, irregular heartbeats, dizziness, and swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat may occur. If you notice any of these severe symptoms, stop using Xalatan and seek medical attention immediately.
Xalatan eye drops come in a plastic bottle with a dropper and screw cap, protected by an overcap. The bottle appears half full upon initial use, providing a minimum of 80 drops, which is enough for 4 weeks if used in both eyes.
It is crucial to use Xalatan as directed by your doctor and to report any adverse reactions promptly. Always store the medication properly to maintain its effectiveness.
