Ceprotin: Effective Treatment for Severe Congenital Protein C Deficiency

Ceprotin is a medication used to treat patients with severe congenital protein C deficiency, a condition that increases the risk of blood clots. This condition can lead to serious complications such as purpura fulminans, a severe skin and systemic blood clotting disorder, and venous thrombosis.

Ceprotin contains human protein C, which is extracted and purified from human plasma. In the body, protein C regulates blood clotting by controlling the generation of thrombin, one of the substances involved in clot formation. By replacing protein C in deficient patients, Ceprotin helps control or prevent clotting problems.

The medicine is indicated for the prevention and treatment of purpura fulminans, coumarin-induced skin necrosis, and venous thromboembolism. It is particularly effective in treating acute thrombotic episodes and providing short-term or long-term prophylaxis.

Ceprotin is available by prescription only and should be administered under the guidance of a healthcare professional. The most serious side effects observed in clinical trials include rash, itching, and lightheadedness. Other adverse reactions reported during postapproval use include hemothorax, hypotension, hyperhydrosis, fever, and restlessness.

It is important to note that Ceprotin contains trace amounts of heparin, which may lead to heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. Additionally, as with all plasma-derived therapeutics, there is a potential risk of transmitting infectious agents.

Ceprotin has been shown to be effective in 94% of episodes of purpura fulminans, with the remaining cases requiring dosage adjustments. It is available in various presentations and has been authorized for use in the EU since July 2001.
