Description

Creston 10 mg is a medication used to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. It is indicated for patients with heterozygous and homozygous hypercholesterolemia, as well as those with mixed dyslipidemia. This includes Fredrickson Type IIa and IIb dyslipidemia, which can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Creston 10 mg works by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is crucial for cholesterol production in the liver. It increases the number of LDL receptors on the liver cells, enhancing the uptake and catabolism of LDL cholesterol. Additionally, it reduces the synthesis of VLDL, thereby lowering the total number of VLDL and LDL particles in the blood.

The recommended dose range for Creston 10 mg is 5 to 40 mg once daily. For patients not reaching their LDL-C goal with 20 mg, the dose can be increased to 40 mg. The starting dose for patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) is 20 mg per day. Pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) can take 5 to 10 mg per day for those aged 8 to less than 10 years, and 5 to 20 mg per day for those aged 10 to 17 years. For pediatric patients with HoFH, the dose is 20 mg per day for those aged 7 to 17 years.

Creston 10 mg can be taken with or without food at any time of day. However, it is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to its components, liver disease, and pregnant women. It is also not recommended for nursing mothers.

Common side effects include headache, myalgia, constipation, asthenia, abdominal pain, and nausea. The safety of Creston 10 mg in pregnant women has not been established, and its excretion in human milk is unknown.

Patients should be advised to promptly report any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, as these can be signs of skeletal muscle effects such as myopathy and rhabdomyolysis. Liver enzyme abnormalities can also occur, so liver enzymes should be monitored before and during treatment.

Creston 10 mg should be stored at a temperature below 30°C, protected from light and moisture, and kept out of the reach of children. The safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established.

Overall, Creston 10 mg is a selective and competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, offering a comprehensive approach to managing cholesterol levels and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
