• Manic or Mixed Episodes in Bipolar Disorder: Divalproex sodium helps manage the extreme mood swings associated with bipolar disorder, whether or not they include psychotic features.
• Complex Partial Seizures and Absence Seizures: This medication is effective in treating complex partial seizures and simple and complex absence seizures. It can also be used as an adjunct therapy for patients with multiple seizure types that include absence seizures.
• Migraine Headaches: Divalproex sodium is prescribed to prevent migraine headaches, though it does not work to treat migraines once they have started.

Important Dosage Information

• Mania: The initial dose is 25 mg/kg/day, which can be increased as needed to achieve therapeutic response or desired plasma levels. The maximum recommended dosage is 60 mg/kg/day.
• Epilepsy: For complex partial seizures, the starting dose is 10 to 15 mg/kg/day, with increments of 5 to 10 mg/kg/day at one-week intervals until optimal clinical response is achieved. The maximum recommended dosage is also 60 mg/kg/day.
