Diprolene Lotion is a prescription corticosteroid used to relieve redness, swelling, heat, pain, and itching associated with inflammatory skin conditions. It contains betamethasone dipropionate, a synthetic adrenocorticosteroid with high corticosteroid activity and slight mineralocorticoid activity. This lotion is applied topically and is indicated for the relief of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses in patients 13 years of age or older.
Each gram of Diprolene Lotion 0.05% contains 0.643 mg of betamethasone dipropionate USP, which is equivalent to 0.5 mg of betamethasone. The lotion base includes hydroxypropyl cellulose, isopropyl alcohol (30%), phosphoric acid to adjust the pH, propylene glycol, purified water, and sodium phosphate monobasic monohydrate.
Diprolene Lotion is particularly useful for managing conditions like scalp psoriasis. However, it is important to note that prolonged use can lead to HPA axis suppression, a condition where the body’s natural cortisol production is reduced. If this occurs, the drug should be gradually withdrawn, the frequency of application reduced, or substituted with a less potent corticosteroid. Signs and symptoms of steroid withdrawal may also occur, requiring supplemental systemic corticosteroids in some cases.
