Humulin R: Regular Insulin Human Injection

Humulin R is a type of insulin that is identical to the insulin produced by the human body. It is made using recombinant DNA technology in a special strain of bacteria called Escherichia coli. This process ensures that the insulin is structurally identical to natural human insulin.

Humulin R is a sterile, clear, aqueous solution that contains 100 units of human insulin per milliliter. It also includes glycerin (16 mg/mL) and metacresol (2.5 mg/mL) to help preserve the insulin. The solution has a pH range of 7.0 to 7.8, and sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid may be added during manufacturing to adjust the pH.

This insulin is designed for subcutaneous injection and should not be used intramuscularly. It starts taking effect within 30 minutes and can last for approximately 4 to 12 hours, depending on the dose, site of injection, blood supply, temperature, and physical activity.

Humulin R is used to treat diabetes by substituting for inadequate endogenous insulin secretion. It helps restore the body’s ability to metabolize carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, thereby correcting the disordered metabolism and inappropriate hyperglycemia associated with diabetes mellitus.
