Smecta is an anti-diarrheal medicine designed to help manage acute diarrhea. It contains Diosmectite, a natural clay that covers the intestinal mucosa, binding to viruses and bacteria to eliminate them through the stools. This helps protect the mucosa and allows it to recover, reducing the symptoms of acute diarrhea and providing gentle relief.
Smecta is available in two flavors: Orange and Strawberry. Each sachet should be mixed with half a glass of water before administration. The dosage is simple and adapted to each age group:
- Children (over 2 years): 4 sachets per day for the first 3 days, then 2 sachets per day thereafter.
- Adults: 3 sachets per day for 7 days.
- Babies and children: Should be taken in addition to an oral rehydration solution to avoid dehydration.
- Chronic diarrhea in adults: Average dosage is 3 sachets per day.
It is essential to rehydrate with plenty of salty or sweet fluids and maintain food intake, excluding raw vegetables, fruit, green vegetables, spicy food, and frozen foods and drinks. If you have acute or chronic diarrhea that doesn’t improve within 7 days, or if it is associated with a high temperature, sudden weight loss, or vomiting, seek medical advice.
Smecta contains two sugars (glucose and sucrose) and is not recommended for patients with fructose intolerance, glucose or galactose malabsorption syndrome, or sucrase-isomaltase deficiency. It should be taken separately from other treatments to avoid reducing their efficacy. If you are hypersensitive to diosmectite or any other ingredients, do not use Smecta. Always follow the instructions provided by your doctor or pharmacist and check the product leaflet for more information about potential side effects.
