Noctamid 1mg: Effective Treatment for Severe Insomnia
Noctamid 1mg is a medication specifically designed to help individuals with severe insomnia, characterized by difficulty falling asleep and frequent nocturnal awakenings. It contains the active ingredient lormetazepam, a short-acting benzodiazepine that enhances the action of GABA, a chemical messenger in the brain, to promote sleep.
How It Works:
Lormetazepam binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the central nervous system, which increases the inhibitory effect of GABA. This results in sedative-hypnotic effects, including shortened sleep latency, reduced nocturnal arousals, and prolonged sleep duration without contributing to undesired sedation.
Indications and Usage:
Noctamid 1mg is indicated for short-term treatment of insomnia when the disorder is severe, disabling, or causes extreme distress. It is typically prescribed as a single dose of 1mg for adults, with a reduced dose of 0.5mg for elderly patients. For patients with chronic respiratory insufficiency or hepatic insufficiency, a dose reduction should be considered.
Important Considerations:
- Duration of Treatment: Noctamid should be used for the shortest possible duration, usually ranging from a few days to two weeks, with a maximum of four weeks. Continuous long-term use is not recommended unless advised by a doctor.
- Dependence and Withdrawal: Benzodiazepines like Noctamid can lead to physical or mental dependence. Stopping the medication abruptly may result in withdrawal symptoms such as muscle pain, anxiety, and irritability. Gradual dose reduction is necessary to minimize these symptoms.
- Contraindications: Noctamid is contraindicated in patients with myasthenia gravis, hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines, severe respiratory insufficiency, and sleep apnea syndrome. It should not be given to patients under 18 years of age without careful assessment.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include headache, sedation, and anxiety. More serious adverse reactions include angioedema and completed suicide or suicide attempts in association with unmasking of pre-existing depression. The medication should be taken with caution, especially in patients with a history of depression.
How to Take:
Swallow the tablet with water before going to bed. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your doctor, and do not use Noctamid for longer than recommended.
