Cortisporin Eye Suspension: A Steroid and Antibiotic Combination for Eye Infections.
Cortisporin Eye Suspension is a sterile antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory medication designed for ophthalmic use. It combines neomycin and polymyxin B sulfates to combat bacterial infections with hydrocortisone to reduce inflammation. Each milliliter of the suspension contains 3.5 mg of neomycin sulfate, 10,000 units of polymyxin B sulfate, and 10 mg of hydrocortisone.
This medication is indicated for steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions where bacterial infection or the risk of bacterial infection exists. It is particularly useful in treating conditions such as conjunctivitis, corneal injuries, and anterior uveitis. The suspension is effective against common bacterial eye pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella/Enterobacter species, Neisseria species, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
However, it does not provide adequate coverage against Serratia marcescens and streptococci, including Streptococcus pneumoniae. Cortisporin Eye Suspension is contraindicated in most viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva, including epithelial herpes simplex keratitis (dendritic keratitis), vaccinia, and varicella. It is also contraindicated in mycobacterial infections of the eye and fungal diseases of ocular structures.
If you have shown hypersensitivity to any of its components, you should avoid using Cortisporin Eye Suspension. Always follow the instructions provided by your healthcare professional for proper use and dosage.
