Tensiomin: Effective Treatment for Congestive Heart Failure
Tensiomin is a medication used to treat congestive heart failure, particularly in patients with acute and chronic forms of ischemic heart disease. This condition often results from recent or advanced myocardial infarction, aneurysms, and other related issues. The medication helps improve regional blood flow to the brain and kidneys, making it well-tolerated in patients with low arterial blood pressure.
The treatment involves a daily dose of 53.4 mg, which has been shown to have both acute and long-term beneficial hemodynamic effects. In some patients, these effects were verified through thermodilution Swan-Ganz catheterization. The medication improves the parameters of ejection function moderately and decreases left ventricular filling pressure significantly without increasing myocardial oxygen demand. The “double product” is also lowered in response to Tensiomin.
During clinical follow-up, which can range from 6 days to 2 years, there is an average improvement in the NYHA functional class by 1.2. However, despite combined vasodilator and dobutamine treatment, 4 patients died. Side effects were observed only with higher doses, including transient worsening of renal function in 3 patients and dysgeusia in 2.
Overall, Tensiomin is effective and safe for patients suffering from all kinds of congestive heart failure complicating ischemic heart disease. It is crucial to administer the drug in a titrated manner to avoid critical falls in blood pressure and coronary blood flow, especially in patients with acute myocardial infarction and angina.
