Diclofenac, commonly known as Diclac, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat mild-to-moderate pain and relieve symptoms of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It helps reduce inflammation, swelling, stiffness, and joint pain. This medication is also effective in treating ankylosing spondylitis, a type of arthritis that affects the spine, and other painful conditions like menstrual cramps.
Diclofenac is available in various dosage forms, including capsules, enteric-coated tablets, extended-release tablets, tablets, and a powder for solution. It is often prescribed to manage acute migraine attacks in adults, although it does not prevent or reduce the frequency of migraine attacks.
When taking Diclac, it is essential to follow your doctor’s instructions carefully, as this medication does not cure arthritis and will only provide relief as long as you continue to take it. Additionally, Diclac can increase the risk of gastrointestinal ulcers, so it is sometimes used in combination with misoprostol to protect against these ulcers.
Diclofenac works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 and COX-2 enzymes, which are responsible for producing prostaglandins that contribute to inflammation and pain signaling. This mechanism helps reduce inflammation and alleviate pain, making it a common first-line therapy for various painful conditions.
