Flurofen: An Anti-Inflammatory Analgesic for Pain Relief.
Flurofen is an anti-inflammatory analgesic and antipyretic medication used to reduce pain, inflammation, and fever. It belongs to the phenylalkynoic acid series and has been shown to reduce bone resorption in periodontal disease. This medication is particularly effective in treating conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other inflammatory conditions. It works by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which are responsible for the production of prostaglandins that cause pain and inflammation.
Flurofen is available in oral tablet form, typically in strengths of 100mg and 50mg. It is a prescription medication and should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider. The topical ophthalmic solution, known as Ocufen, is used to prevent intraoperative miosis and treat eye-related inflammatory conditions.
Flurofen’s anti-inflammatory effect occurs through the reversible inhibition of COX enzymes, effectively decreasing the concentration of prostaglandins involved in inflammation, pain, swelling, and fever. It is a non-selective COX inhibitor, meaning it inhibits both COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, making it one of the most potent nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) available.
This medication is commonly used to treat acute or long-term symptomatic treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. It may also be used to alleviate pain associated with dysmenorrhea and mild to moderate pain accompanied by inflammation, such as bursitis, tendonitis, and soft tissue trauma.
