Poly-Pred: A Comprehensive Ophthalmic Solution for Inflammatory and Infectious Eye Conditions
Poly-Pred is a topical anti-inflammatory and anti-infective combination product designed to treat a variety of eye conditions. It contains prednisolone acetate, a corticosteroid that helps reduce inflammation, and neomycin sulfate and polymyxin B sulfate, antibiotics that combat bacterial infections.
Indications and Uses
Poly-Pred is indicated for conditions where a corticosteroid is necessary and there is a risk of bacterial infection. This includes inflammatory conditions of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva, cornea, and anterior segment of the globe. It is also used in chronic anterior uveitis and corneal injuries from chemical, radiation, or thermal burns, or penetration of foreign bodies.
Dosage and Administration
To use Poly-Pred, instill 1 or 2 drops into the affected eye every 3 to 4 hours, or more frequently as needed. For acute infections, administration can be every 30 minutes, with the frequency reduced as the infection is brought under control. When treating the lids, instill 1 or 2 drops and rub the excess on the lids and lid margins.
Precautions and Contraindications
Before using Poly-Pred, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking other medications, or have allergies to any of the ingredients. This medication is contraindicated in epithelial herpes simplex keratitis, vaccinia, varicella, and many other viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva. It is also contraindicated in mycobacterial infections of the eye and fungal diseases of the ocular structures.
Side Effects and Safety
Common side effects include blurred vision and temporary burning or stinging. However, severe side effects such as rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue, changes in vision, continued or worsening itching, swelling, or irritation, and discharge from the eyes should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. Poly-Pred is generally safe for elderly patients, but it is important to follow the recommended dosage and consult your doctor if you have any concerns.
Storage and Handling
Store Poly-Pred at 15-25°C (59-77°F) and protect it from freezing. Shake the bottle well before each use and keep the container tightly closed to prevent contamination. If your doctor has prescribed more than one eye medication, ask for the best order of use to avoid any potential interactions.
By following these guidelines and consulting with your healthcare provider, Poly-Pred can effectively manage your eye condition and provide relief from inflammation and infection.
