Albendazole: Effective Treatment for Neurocysticercosis and Helminth Infections.

Albendazole is a powerful medication used to treat various helminth infections, including parenchymal neurocysticercosis caused by the larval form of the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium. It is also effective against cystic hydatid disease of the liver, lung, and peritoneum, caused by the larval form of the dog tapeworm, Echinococcus granulosus.

This benzimidazole anthelmintic works by binding to the colchicine-sensitive site of tubulin, which inhibits the polymerization of microtubules. This action disrupts the energy production of the parasite, leading to degenerative changes in its tegument and intestinal cells. As a result, the parasite becomes immobilized and eventually dies.

Albendazole is available under the brand name Albenza and is approved for use in both humans and animals. It is a small molecule drug that has been widely used since its initial U.S. approval in 1996. The medication is typically taken orally and is known for its broad-spectrum efficacy against many types of helminth infections.
