Depo-Medrol: A Comprehensive Overview
Depo-Medrol is an anti-inflammatory glucocorticoid designed for intramuscular, intra-articular, soft tissue, or intralesional injections. It is available in two strengths: 40 mg/mL and 80 mg/mL. Each milliliter of the preparation contains:
- Methylprednisolone Acetate: 40 mg or 80 mg.
- Polyethylene Glycol 3350: 29 mg or 28 mg.
- Myristyl-gamma-picolinium Chloride: 0.195 mg or 0.189 mg.
Sodium Chloride is added to adjust tonicity, and the pH is adjusted with sodium hydroxide and/or hydrochloric acid to ensure it remains within the USP specified range (3.0 to 7.0).
Indications and Uses
Depo-Medrol is indicated as adjunctive therapy for short-term administration to manage acute episodes or exacerbations in various conditions, including:
- Acute Gouty Arthritis.
- Acute and Subacute Bursitis.
- Acute Nonspecific Tenosynovitis.
- Epicondylitis.
- Rheumatoid Arthritis.
- Synovitis of Osteoarthritis.
It is also used for intralesional administration in conditions such as alopecia areata.
