Dinoprostone E-2 Vaginal Suppository for Inducing Uterine Contractions

Dinoprostone E-2 is a vaginal suppository used to induce uterine contractions, similar to those experienced during labor. Each suppository contains 20 mg of dinoprostone, a naturally occurring prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), in a mixture of glycerides of fatty acids. When administered intravaginally, dinoprostone stimulates the myometrium of the gravid uterus to contract, helping to evacuate the products of conception from the uterus in most cases.

This medication is indicated for the termination of pregnancy from the 12th through the 20th gestational week and for the evacuation of uterine contents in cases of missed abortion or intrauterine fetal death up to 28 weeks of gestation. It is also used in the management of nonmetastatic gestational trophoblastic disease, such as benign hydatidiform mole.

Dinoprostone is typically used by medically trained personnel in a hospital setting with immediate intensive care and surgical facilities available. It is crucial to use this medication with caution in patients with a history of asthma, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, renal disease, hepatic disease, anemia, jaundice, diabetes, or epilepsy.

The most common adverse reactions include those related to the contractile effect on smooth muscle, such as vomiting and diarrhea. While there is no evidence that short-term administration of dinoprostone can cause bone effects, it is essential to monitor patients for any potential side effects.
