Key Features:

• Indications: Emazole is indicated for GERD in patients with oesophagitis and/or severe symptoms of reflux. It is also used for healing gastric ulcers associated with NSAID therapy and preventing gastric and duodenal ulcers in patients at risk.
• Dosage: The recommended dose is 20-40 mg once daily, administered intravenously over 3 minutes for 20 mg and 10-30 minutes for 40 mg.
• Mechanism of Action: Emazole works by inhibiting the enzyme H+K+-ATPase, which reduces acid secretion in the stomach.
• Effectiveness: It maintains an intragastric pH above 4 for a significant portion of the day, effectively healing reflux oesophagitis in approximately 78% of patients after 4 weeks and 93% after 8 weeks of treatment.

• Contraindications: Emazole should not be used in children due to a lack of available data. Patients with severe renal insufficiency should be treated with caution, and those with severe liver impairment should not exceed a maximum daily dose of 20 mg.
