Description

EpoGen (Epoetin alfa) is an erythropoietin-stimulating agent used to treat anemia in various conditions, including chronic kidney disease and HIV infection. It works by stimulating the production of red blood cells, helping to increase the red blood cell level and reduce the need for transfusions.

EpoGen is available in different formulations for intravenous or subcutaneous administration. The product is formulated as a sterile, colorless liquid in an isotonic sodium chloride/sodium citrate or sodium chloride/sodium phosphate buffered solution. It contains 2000, 3000, 4000, or 10,000 Units of Epoetin alfa per milliliter, along with albumin, sodium citrate, sodium chloride, and citric acid.

EpoGen is indicated for patients on dialysis and those not on dialysis. It is also used to reduce the need for allogeneic red blood cell transfusions in patients undergoing elective, noncardiac, nonvascular surgery. However, it is not intended for immediate correction of severe anemia and should not be used in patients with uncontrolled hypertension, pure red cell aplasia, or serious allergic reactions to the product.

Before starting therapy, patients’ iron stores should be evaluated, with transferrin saturation at least 20% and ferritin at least 100 ng/mL. Blood pressure should be adequately controlled prior to initiation of EpoGen therapy. The product has been shown to significantly increase hematocrit levels and reduce transfusion requirements in clinical studies.
