Glucoglin: Relief for Mild to Moderate Osteoarthritis Symptoms
Glucoglin is a medication designed to alleviate symptoms associated with mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee. Each tablet contains 750 mg of glucosamine hydrochloride, which is equivalent to 625 mg of glucosamine. The recommended dosage is 1250 mg of glucosamine once daily for symptom relief. It is essential to note that glucosamine is not indicated for the treatment of acute painful symptoms, and relief may not be experienced until after several weeks of treatment in some cases.
Glucoglin is not suitable for children and adolescents under the age of 18 due to a lack of safety and efficacy data. Additionally, it is crucial to consult a doctor to rule out the presence of joint diseases that may require other treatments. For patients with impaired glucose tolerance, monitoring blood glucose levels and adjusting insulin requirements as necessary is recommended. Similarly, patients with a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease should have their blood lipid levels monitored during treatment.
The mechanism of action of glucosamine in humans is unknown, and the period to onset of response cannot be assessed. However, in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that glucosamine stimulates the synthesis of physiological glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans by chondrocytes and hyaluronic acid by synoviocytes.
Glucoglin tablets can be taken with or without food, and they should not be broken into smaller pieces as the score line is only for ease of swallowing. If no relief of symptoms is experienced after 2-3 months, continued treatment with glucosamine should be re-evaluated. Always follow the advice of your healthcare provider when using this medication.
