Ketamine Hydrochloride Injection

Ketamine hydrochloride, commonly known as Ketalar, is a non-barbiturate general anesthetic used for diagnostic and surgical procedures that do not require skeletal muscle relaxation. It is formulated as a sterile solution for intravenous or intramuscular injection, available in concentrations of 10, 50, and 100 mg of ketamine base per milliliter. The 10 mg/mL solution is isotonic with sodium chloride, making it suitable for various medical applications.

Ketalar is best suited for short procedures but can be used with additional doses for longer procedures. It is also indicated for the induction of anesthesia prior to the administration of other general anesthetic agents and to supplement low-potency agents like nitrous oxide. The anesthetic state produced by Ketalar is characterized by profound analgesia and is often referred to as “dissociative anesthesia,” as it selectively interrupts association pathways of the brain before producing somatesthetic sensory blockade.

Ketalar is contraindicated in patients with hypertension or cardiac decompensation, as it can cause a significant elevation of blood pressure. Postoperative confusional states may occur during the recovery period, and cardiac function should be continually monitored in patients with hypertension or cardiac issues.

In clinical trials, Ketalar has been administered in over 12,000 operative and diagnostic procedures, with anesthesia rated as “excellent” or “good” by the anaesthetist and surgeon in 90% and 93% of cases, respectively. It has been shown to be effective in various medical settings, including diagnostic and surgical procedures.
