Monofer: Effective Treatment for Iron Deficiency Anemia
Monofer is a solution for injection used to treat iron deficiency anemia when oral iron preparations are ineffective or cannot be used. It is also indicated for situations where rapid iron delivery is clinically necessary. The diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia should be based on appropriate laboratory tests, such as serum ferritin, serum iron, transferrin saturation, or hypochromic red cells.
Monofer contains iron in a complex form that ensures a controlled and slow release of bioavailable iron to iron-binding proteins, minimizing the risk of free iron toxicity. Each milliliter of the solution contains 100 mg of iron as iron(III) isomaltoside 1000. The product comes in various vial sizes: 1 ml, 2 ml, 5 ml, and 10 ml, each containing 100 mg, 200 mg, 500 mg, and 1000 mg of iron respectively.
The Monofer formulation is designed to be rapidly taken up by the cells in the reticuloendothelial system, particularly in the liver and spleen, from where iron is slowly released. This process ensures that the iron is immediately bound to available protein moieties to form hemosiderin or ferritin, the physiological storage forms of iron.
Evidence of a therapeutic response can be seen within a few days of administration as an increase in the reticulocyte count. Monofer is a sterile solution for injection, supplied in clear glass vials, and is available in packs of one vial each.
