Triviraten

Triviraten is a vaccine designed to protect against measles, mumps, and rubella. It was specifically developed for children who are strongly allergic to eggs, as it uses a different method of cultivation. The vaccine contains live, attenuated viruses of measles, mumps, and rubella, which are grown in chicken embryo and human cells. It also includes sugars, salts, amino acids, pH indicator dye, and purified water as excipients. The vaccine does not contain significant amounts of egg protein, making it suitable for those with severe egg allergies. However, it was later found that Triviraten does not provide adequate protection against mumps, so individuals who have received this vaccine are recommended to receive an additional dose of an MMR vaccine (such as Priorix or M-M-RVAXPRO) to boost their immunity against mumps. The primary vaccination series for Triviraten typically consists of two doses, with the first dose administered at 12 to 18 months and the second dose at six years. If a child is under 11 months, an additional dose may be given, followed by the standard doses at the recommended ages. This vaccine has been part of the national vaccination program in Finland and has contributed significantly to the eradication of measles, mumps, and rubella-related secondary diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, and encephalitis. Despite its limitations, Triviraten remains an important tool in protecting vulnerable populations from these serious infections.
