Varilrix

Varilrix is a live-attenuated varicella vaccine designed to protect against chickenpox. It contains the Oka strain of the varicella-zoster virus, which is weakened to ensure it does not cause the disease in healthy individuals. The vaccine is administered through subcutaneous or intramuscular injection, typically in the deltoid region or the anterolateral area of the thigh.

Varilrix is indicated for active immunization against varicella in healthy subjects from 12 months of age and older. It can also be given to infants as young as 9 months in certain circumstances. The vaccine works by stimulating the body’s immune system to produce antibodies that protect against the varicella virus.

Each dose of Varilrix contains not less than 103.3 plaque-forming units (PFU) of the attenuated virus. The vaccine is available in a lyophilized powder form that needs to be reconstituted with a solvent before administration. It has been reformulated to allow storage at 2 to 8°C, making it easier to handle and store.

Varilrix is particularly important for individuals at high risk of severe chickenpox, such as those undergoing cancer treatment. For these individuals, additional doses may be required, and the administration should be postponed if they have an acute severe febrile illness. However, minor infections do not typically contraindicate vaccination.

The recommended dosage for healthy subjects is two doses, given at least 6 weeks apart. For high-risk patients, the administration schedule may vary based on their specific needs and medical conditions. Varilrix offers limited protection against varicella if administered up to 72 hours after exposure to the natural disease.
