Zolmitriptan (Zomig) – Effective Migraine Relief
Zolmitriptan, commonly known as Zomig, is a medication specifically designed to treat migraine attacks. It works by narrowing the blood vessels in the head, which helps to relieve the pain and other symptoms associated with migraines. Zomig is available in two forms: conventional tablets and orally disintegrating tablets, known as Zomig Rapimelt.
How It Works
Zolmitriptan is a selective 5-HT1B/1D receptor agonist, which means it targets specific receptors in the brain to reduce the widening of blood vessels that causes migraine pain. This action helps to alleviate the headache and other symptoms like nausea and sensitivity to light.
Dosage and Administration
The recommended initial dose for treating a migraine attack is 2.5 mg. The conventional tablet should be swallowed whole with water, while the orally disintegrating tablet, Zomig Rapimelt, dissolves quickly on the tongue and is swallowed with saliva.
Important Information
- Contraindications: Zomig should not be used if you are allergic to zolmitriptan or any of its ingredients, have a history of heart conditions, suffer from chest pain (Prinzmetal’s Angina), have severe or uncontrolled hypertension, or are taking certain other medications like ergotamines or monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
- Dosage Adjustments: For patients with severe hepatic impairment, a maximum dose of 5 mg in 24 hours is recommended. No dosage adjustment is required for patients with mild or moderate hepatic impairment or renal impairment.
- Use in the Elderly: The safety and efficacy of Zomig in individuals over 65 years have not been systematically evaluated, so it is not recommended for this age group.
Product Forms
- Zomig Tablets: Available in 2.5 mg and 5 mg strengths, these film-coated tablets contain anhydrous lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium starch glycolate, magnesium stearate, and other excipients.
- Zomig Rapimelt Tablets: These orally disintegrating tablets contain aspartame, citric acid, colloidal silicon dioxide, and other excipients. Each 2.5 mg tablet contains 2.81 mg of phenylalanine.
Warnings and Precautions
Before using Zomig, it is essential to discuss your medical history and any current medications with your healthcare provider. Zomig should only be used to treat actual migraine attacks and not for preventing or reducing the number of attacks.
By understanding how Zolmitriptan works and the specific forms it comes in, you can make informed decisions about your migraine treatment. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new medication.
