Malanil Tablets for Malaria Prophylaxis and Treatment
Malanil is a fixed-dose combination medication that effectively treats and prevents malaria, particularly the drug-resistant form of Plasmodium falciparum. This product contains atovaquone and proguanil hydrochloride, which work together to target both the blood and liver stages of the malaria parasite.
Indications
- Prophylaxis: Malanil is recommended for preventing malaria in areas where the parasite may be resistant to other antimalarials. It should be taken one to two days before entering a malaria-endemic area and continued daily until seven days after leaving the area.
- Treatment: Malanil is also used to treat malaria infections. The adult treatment dose involves taking four standard tablets once a day for three consecutive days. For children, the dosage varies based on body weight.
Dosage and Administration
- Adults: One tablet daily for prophylaxis, taken with food or a milky drink at the same time each day.
- Children: Dosage depends on body weight:
- 11-20 kg: One low-strength tablet daily.
- 21-30 kg: Two low-strength tablets daily.
- 31-40 kg: Three low-strength tablets daily.
- Greater than 40 kg: One high-strength tablet daily.
