Flucloxacillin 500 mg capsules are an antibiotic used to treat infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, including those that produce penicillinase. This medication is effective against a wide range of infections, such as skin and soft tissue infections (like boils, abscesses, and cellulitis), respiratory tract infections (including pneumonia and sinusitis), and other infections like osteomyelitis and urinary tract infections.
Key Indications:
- Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Boils, abscesses, carbuncles, ulcers, eczema, acne, furunculosis, cellulitis, and infected wounds and burns.
- Respiratory Tract Infections: Pneumonia, lung abscesses, empyema, sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and quinsy.
- Other Infections: Osteomyelitis, enteritis, endocarditis, urinary tract infections, meningitis, and septicaemia.
Mechanism of Action:
Flucloxacillin works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, specifically by disrupting peptidoglycan synthesis. This leads to the weakening and eventual rupture of the bacterial cell wall.
Administration:
- Oral Administration: Take the capsules 1 hour before meals.
- Parenteral Administration: Available for intramuscular or intravenous use.
Important Considerations:
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Use during pregnancy only when necessary. Excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administering to lactating mothers.
- Renal Failure: In severe renal failure (creatinine clearance <10 ml/min), a reduction in dose or an extension of dose interval should be considered.
