Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium Tablets
Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium Tablets are a combination antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. The tablets contain amoxicillin, which works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell wall mucopeptides, thereby exerting a bactericidal action against sensitive organisms. Clavulanate potassium, the ?-lactamase inhibitor, prevents certain bacteria from producing enzymes that can inactivate amoxicillin, allowing it to effectively treat infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to amoxicillin.
Indications:
- Sinusitis: Effective against ?-lactamase-producing strains of H. influenzae and Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis.
- Otitis Media: Effective against ?-lactamase-producing strains of H. influenzae and Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis.
- Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: Effective against ?-lactamase-producing strains of H. influenzae, K. pneumoniae, S. aureus, and Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis.
- Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Effective against ?-lactamase-producing strains of S. aureus.
- Urinary Tract Infections: Effective against ?-lactamase-producing strains of E. coli.
Dosage:
- Adults: For mild to moderate infections, take 1 tablet of 500 mg amoxicillin and 125 mg clavulanate potassium every 12 hours. For more severe infections or lower respiratory tract infections, take 1 tablet of 875 mg amoxicillin and 125 mg clavulanate potassium every 12 hours, or 1 tablet of 500 mg every 8 hours.
- Children (12 weeks and older): Dosing varies based on the severity of the infection and the child’s weight. Consult a healthcare provider for specific dosing instructions.
Duration of Treatment:
The normal duration of treatment is 7 to 10 days, but it should be continued for at least 48 to 72 hours beyond the time the patient becomes asymptomatic or evidence of bacterial eradication has been obtained. For infections caused by ?-hemolytic streptococci, a minimum of 10 days of treatment is recommended to prevent acute rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis.
Renal Impairment:
For adults with creatinine clearance greater than 30 ml/min, no adjustment is necessary. For those with creatinine clearance between 10 to 30 ml/min, take 1 tablet of 500 mg amoxicillin and 125 mg clavulanate potassium twice daily. For those with creatinine clearance less than 10 ml/min, consult a healthcare provider for specific dosing instructions.
This medication is available in two strengths: 500 mg amoxicillin and 125 mg clavulanate potassium per tablet, and 875 mg amoxicillin and 125 mg clavulanate potassium per tablet. It is essential to follow the prescribed dosage and duration of treatment to ensure effective treatment of bacterial infections while minimizing the risk of side effects. Always consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication.
