Lomotil is a medication used to treat diarrhea. It is typically prescribed for acute diarrhea, which is usually caused by a short-term illness like a stomach bug. Lomotil can also be used to manage chronic diarrhea that lasts more than four weeks and may be related to a digestive condition.
The medication works by slowing down digestion and relaxing the muscles in the digestive tract. This allows food to move more slowly through the stomach and intestines, helping the body absorb water and electrolytes. As a result, stools become less watery and less frequent.
Lomotil is available as an oral tablet and comes in a brand-name and generic version, known as diphenoxylate/atropine. Each tablet contains 2.5 milligrams of diphenoxylate hydrochloride and 0.025 milligrams of atropine sulfate.
Lomotil is approved for use in adults and children aged 13 years and older. However, it is contraindicated in pediatric patients under 6 years old due to the risk of respiratory and central nervous system depression. Additionally, it should not be used in patients with diarrhea caused by pseudomembranous enterocolitis or other enterotoxin-producing bacteria, as it can lead to severe gastrointestinal complications.
Lomotil is a Schedule V controlled substance, which means it has a medical use but may be misused due to its opioid-like properties. Despite this, it is not considered addictive at the recommended doses for treating diarrhea. Always follow your doctor’s prescribed dosage, as it may vary based on your condition, age, and other medical factors.
