Salbutamol Inhaler Solution
Salbutamol is a medication used to treat asthma, including asthma attacks and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, as well as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It works by opening up the medium and large airways in the lungs, providing quick relief from bronchospasm. This inhaler solution is typically used with a nebulizer and is available in various forms, including a pill, liquid, and intravenous solution.
The inhaled version of salbutamol starts working within 15 minutes and can last for two to six hours, making it an effective short-term bronchodilator. It is also used to treat high blood potassium levels by stimulating potassium flow into cells.
For adults, adolescents, and children aged 4 to 11 years, salbutamol nebuliser solutions are indicated. The solution contains 2.5mg of salbutamol per 2.5ml, which is a clear sterile solution in normal saline. It is particularly suitable for managing and preventing asthma attacks due to its fast onset of action.
By relaxing airway smooth muscle, salbutamol helps to alleviate symptoms of asthma and COPD, making it a common medicine in rescue inhalers. It is a selective ?2-agonist that acts on the ?2-adrenoceptors of bronchial muscle, providing short-acting bronchodilation with a fast onset in reversible airways obstruction.
