Forane

Forane is a nonflammable liquid inhalation anesthetic used to induce general anesthesia. It is administered by vaporizing and is known for its ability to increase cerebral blood flow at deeper levels of anesthesia, which can lead to a transient increase in intracranial pressure. In patients with or at risk for elevated intracranial pressure, Forane should be used in conjunction with strategies to reduce intracranial pressure.

Forane, with the chemical formula 1-chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethyl difluoromethyl ether, has several physical constants: a molecular weight of 184.5, a boiling point of 48.5°C at 760 mm Hg, a refractive index of 1.2990-1.3005, and a specific gravity of 1.496 at 25°C. The vapor pressure of Forane varies with temperature: 238 mm Hg at 20°C, 295 mm Hg at 25°C, 367 mm Hg at 30°C, and 450 mm Hg at 35°C.

It is essential to note that Forane can react with desiccated carbon dioxide absorbents to produce carbon monoxide, which may result in elevated levels of carboxyhemoglobin in some patients. Therefore, it is crucial to replace the CO2 absorbent if it becomes desiccated before administering Forane.

Forane is a powerful respiratory depressant, and excessive respiratory depression may be related to the depth of anesthesia. Clinicians should monitor patients closely and adjust the dosage accordingly to minimize these risks.
