Seretide Accuhaler/Diskus

Seretide Accuhaler/Diskus is a medication designed for the regular treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It contains a combination of salmeterol and fluticasone propionate, which work together to help manage symptoms and improve lung function.

For asthma, Seretide Accuhaler/Diskus is indicated for patients who are symptomatic on current inhaled corticosteroid therapy or those who require inhaled corticosteroids in addition to regular bronchodilator therapy. It is also suitable for patients who are not adequately controlled on short-acting beta-agonists alone.

In COPD, Seretide Accuhaler/Diskus is used to treat moderate to severe symptoms in patients who have significant symptoms despite bronchodilator therapy. The medication is available in different strengths, including 50/250 micrograms and 50/500 micrograms of salmeterol and fluticasone propionate, respectively.

Seretide Accuhaler/Diskus is administered via inhalation only and should be used regularly for optimal benefit. It is not intended for the relief of acute asthma symptoms, which require a fast-acting bronchodilator like salbutamol. Patients should have their relief medication available at all times and seek medical advice if symptoms worsen or remain uncontrolled.

The device is easy to use: simply open and prime the Accuhaler, place the mouthpiece in your mouth, and inhale the dose. The Accuhaler is a moulded plastic device containing a foil strip with regularly placed blisters, making it convenient for daily use.

Seretide Accuhaler/Diskus is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients, including severe milk-protein allergy. It is also not recommended for patients with unstable or acutely deteriorating asthma, as it may worsen symptoms. However, it has been shown to reduce all-cause mortality in COPD patients when used at a dose of 50/500 micrograms twice daily.
